Definition: what is zero-click search?
A zero-click search ends without a click on an organic result: the search surface answers the question itself. The pattern predates generative search — featured snippets, People-Also-Ask boxes and knowledge panels have produced in-SERP answers for years. With AI Overviews, AI Mode and AI assistants outside Google, the share of queries answered without a click has increased structurally.
The drivers
- AI Overviews: generative answers above the classic results; the click loss is measured by the AI Overview Absorption Rate.
- Featured snippets and People-Also-Ask: the classic position-zero formats.
- Knowledge panels: entity answers for people, organisations, places.
- Shopping and vertical integrations: product data directly in the SERP.
- AI assistants: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot answer queries entirely outside any SERP — the most radical form of zero-click.
The paradoxical opportunity
Fewer clicks do not automatically mean less impact. Brand impressions without a click create recognition, recall and citation events — signals classic analytics does not capture. Watching CTR alone shows only the loss; measuring share of model, citation rate and brand demand shows the brand building that happens in parallel.
The decisive split is by intent: informational queries are increasingly absorbed by answer systems; transactional and navigational clicks remain considerably more stable. The consequence is not a retreat from content but a shift: content that gets cited carries brand visibility — content that merely ranks loses reach.
Measurement consequences
Zero-click forces an extended KPI set: PVI and SoM for generative presence, citation rate for source status, AAR for structural click loss, plus brand search volume and direct traffic as downstream indicators. Attribution needs longer windows (90 days instead of last-click) — the chain “seen in an AI answer → searched directly later” is real but not click-attributable. Google's generative AI report has provided official impression data for this layer since August 2026.

Zero-click is a measurement problem, not the end of visibility
The answer to zero-click is not more content but a new measurement system: counting clicks alone misses the brand building that happens inside answers without any click.
FAQ on zero-click search
What counts as a zero-click search? ▾
Any search that ends without a click on an organic result because the surface delivers the answer itself — via AI Overviews, featured snippets, People-Also-Ask, knowledge panels or shopping modules. AI assistants like ChatGPT answer queries entirely without a SERP and are the most consistent form of it.
Is zero-click the end of SEO? ▾
No — it is the end of a measurement system that only counts clicks. Visibility shifts into answers and citations; brands that appear there build brand and demand even without clicks. SEO work shifts towards citability, entity signals and generative KPIs.
Which KPIs replace the CTR fixation? ▾
A combined set: prompt visibility index (PVI), share of model (SoM) and citation rate for the generative layer, AAR for structural click loss, plus brand search volume and direct traffic as downstream effects. Attribution needs longer windows than last-click.
Are all query types equally affected? ▾
No. Informational queries are absorbed most strongly; transactional and navigational queries keep considerably higher click rates. A portfolio view by intent therefore matters more than any average figure.
